Applications Your experience here at Brook Haven Ranch begins with your application to join the site. You'll be needing to do two applications per human character; one for the character and one for his or her horse. Remember that every character on the site will either bring her own horse with her, or she will adopt one of the rescue horses to take care of and heal with. Remember to check the canon lists for both human and horse characters!

Character Catalog Once your character's bio has been approved, it will be moved into the character catalog in the correct section (student, faculty, staff or resident). Please note that at the time of approval the title of your application may be changed for organizational purposes, especially taking into consideration that the students are sorted into different sections. Thank you for your consideration, and please let us know if you need any help finding things in this area!

Plot Development Plots are the driving force behind any good story, and role playing is really about story telling, after all! This is the place to go to put up your plot page/shipper, to request the character that you absolutely must have and to get some great stories started! Please see the sub-boards in this category for a more specific breakdown.

Tracking Having a thread tracker makes it much easier for members who are interested in your character to follow his story from beginning to end. While it is by no means mandatory to have a thread tracker, we highly recommend it since it can help you to read over the past things that your character has done and it can help others to find your posts more easily! Trackers are definitely a bonus and can help with character development.

Stable Yard There is a large grassy area immediately in front of the actual barn, where the stables are separated from the rest of the ranch as a means of protecting the horses from any noise, and the teenagers from any potential damage from a startled horse.
Students are asked to please remember that the horses are delicate and that they, too, have special needs. All students are asked to be aware of themselves and to follow the rules of the barn at all times. There is a reception area at the front of the barn that is open from 6 am to 9 pm every day. Students are asked to sign the register before entering the barn. |

The Barn The horses of Brook Haven live in the barn, where there are large box stalls (generally 12x12 feet square, though sometimes up to 15x15 feet square) which provide a comfortable environment for the troubled horses that come through Brook Haven Ranch. There is also an extensive tack room, and an office where Charlie Brook can usually be found if you're looking for him.
There are plenty of places in the barn to hang out, for students who are looking for a diversion from their everyday boring lives as high school boarding students, but it should be noted that the horses can be dangerous, and intelligent students will respect them as much as they need respecting. |

Pasture The horses are pastured as much as is feasible given their often agitated state. Some of the horses must be kept separated from the other horses, and it should be noted that stallions are never allowed in the yard when there are mares in season or other stallions around. There is a separate pasture for stallion exercise.
Students may visit their horses at pasture but are reminded to be careful because theirs aren't the only animals out of the barn and horses they aren't familiar with may be dangerous. Students and staff alike should be careful when approaching unfamiliar animals and may want to check with their handlers before getting too close. |

Arena There are two sections to the arena, the indoor section and the outdoor section. In warmer weather, the outdoor arena is always used, while when it's cold, the instructors stick to the indoor arena instead. Both have soft landing areas made of sod so that if students fall, they don't get hurt too badly.
Students are only permitted to be in the training arenas with their instructors. This is for safety reasons. Horses must be cleared to be around other horses before they will be allowed into the arenas in company as well. Most lessons are given privately for safety reasons, until the horses are cleared. |

Classrooms The classrooms are located in cabins near the housing area of the Ranch. Each subject has its own building, and each building is designed to drown out distractions and allow the students to focus on the studying that they are doing in their subjects.
Students are expected to be in class six hours out of the day, but each student has one period that is riding instruction with their counselor or their instructor, which gives them a bit of a break. Not being in class may be cause for discipline. |

Mess Hall Everyone eats three meals a day in the mess hall. Students are expected to arrive on time for meals. Everyone eats breakfast together at 6 am (after the morning chores are done). There are three lunch shifts, one at 11:30 am, one at 12:00 pm, and the third at 12:30 pm. Supper is served at 6 pm.
Snacks are provided throughout the day to all students, staff and faculty. If you need to eat, there is always food available, so come to the Mess to get what you need, since nobody is going to seek you out to give you food. Please don't take food from the Mess to your horse! |

Grounds The school is situated on ranch land, in the mountains where the grass stretches out for acres until you reach the surrounding pine woods where trail rides typically take place. The grounds are beautiful, however, and well maintained even in the dry summer heat. Students are encouraged to make use of these areas for recreation, as long as they keep their distance from the stables and avoid spooking the horses.
The grounds are always monitored, and this isn't a safe place for the students to get themselves involved in trouble. There is always a staff person or faculty member ready to find out what you're into. |

Headmaster's Office Although Dane Lawrence is rarely in his office (since he's busy keeping on top of the students and is usually found somewhere on the grounds), students can come here if they have issues that they need to discuss with him. He's open to helping students with anything that they need, so please feel free to step on in!

Admissions This is the admissions office. You will be checked in by one of the counselors or the faculty members, your bags will be checked, and you'll be taken to your dorm. Please be prepared for this process and be aware that you do not have to do an arrival thread. You're free to create a student who has been at the ranch for some time!

Counseling Center The counseling center is where group therapy sessions take place (most individual therapy sessions take place outside of the office). If you're looking to meet with your counselor, you can probably find him or her here. They are your port of call for all of your emotional needs, so please don't hesitate to get in touch! And don't forget that you're expected to attend your group therapy sessions.

Main Lodge This is the common area for the students, faculty and staff of Brook Haven. It is fully stocked with indoor activities for the students and staff to enjoy after chores and lessons are done and if the weather isn't good.
Students in particular are encouraged to use this area to socialize with one another and to get to know other students. There are plush couches and a small kitchenette with snacks and drinks for students, staff and faculty to use. This is a great hangout area and is considered part of the housing areas. |

Student Housing The students of Brook Haven Ranch live in cabins near the school. There are eight cabins, broken down first by the four groups into which the students are sorted, and then by gender. Each group has two dorm cabins, one for the boys and one for the girls of the group.
Boys are forbidden from going into the girls' dorms and the girls are forbidden from going into the boys' dorms. Anyone caught going into the opposite gender dorms may be punished or expelled. |

Staff Housing The staff of Brook Haven Ranch have a similar living situation to what the students use, with cabins that house staff members four to a dorm. There as many cabins as are necessary in order to house everybody.
Staff members who are married may request individual housing. They will be assigned to a cabin with their family. Any staff member desiring to have their own cabin should request one from the administrator. Thank you! |

Faculty Housing Faculty members have their own cabins on the ranch, which they share with their families (if they have them). Faculty consists of all of the teachers and administration of the school.
The head staff members also have their own housing areas, as the faculty do. Each cabin is fully equipped with everything that the faculty member needs in order to live comfortably on the ranch, and faculty members are expected to take care of their own needs |

Trails The trails on the ranch wind back into the woods that surrounds it, and may once have been used as riding trails. They still are, of course, but only once the horses are more whole. For now they are used mostly for hikes. Remember that students aren't allowed to be out in the woods without adult supervision!

Cell Phones Students have very limited access to cell phones. They aren't allowed at all in classes or in the stables, and there are only certain times of day when students are allowed access to their phones, since part of the therapeutic environment of Brook Haven Ranch is the escape which it provides in getting away from the outside world. If you absolutely must use your cell phone, you can post it here and receive calls and text messages at approved times.

Passing Notes Although it is absolutely against the rules, students sometimes pass notes back and forth to one another in classes, or exchange gossip with one another by leaving notes for one another in the dorm rooms. You can use this forum to pass rapid fire notes back and forth with other students or faculty. This is a great way to quickly exchange information and build relationships organically!

Post Office As with cell phones, computer access is seriously limited. In the case of computers, they are only used during class times, and students do not have access to personal computers for instant messaging or e-mail. Instead, students may use text messaging on their cell phones to contact one another and may receive letters (yes! snail mail!) in the post from parents and friends back home. This is a good character development opportunity!
