[/b] jumping, reading, coffee, alone time, running
dislikes: loud people, western riding, being gay, losing, messes
strengths: determination, intelligence, cleverness, riding
weaknesses: bad eating habits, her parents, too quiet, can't stand up for herself
abilities: upper level equitation and hunter riding, athletic, really good at school
fears: not getting into Yale, disappointing her parents, people finding out she's gay
goals: get into Yale, improve in riding and maybe start eventing, become more outgoing
personality overview: Holland has always been overshadowed by her successful parents and made to be the quiet pretty child who should be seen and not heard. Because of this, she is relatively quiet. She prefers to be alone reading or working on schoolwork, and she gets obsessive about her goals. She's extremely hard on herself, just like her parents are. She throws herself into activities and often makes herself sick with worry and stress. She is very kind and soft-spoken, and while her parents are very pretentious and well-to-do, she is not. She is often ashamed of her money. [/ul][/size][/blockquote]

hometown: Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts
history: Alex and Holland Marquette are perfect people. They met their freshman year at Yale, courted throughout college, then had a huge wedding on their newly purchased plantation in Martha's Vineyard. They founded a travel agency that quickly became successful, and doubled their already huge fortune. Then, of course, the perfect couple had to have the perfect child.
Named for her mother, Holland (called Hollis by her mother, which she hates), was a happy child. Her parents set ridiculously high standards for her, but she almost always met them. She was incredibly bright and talented, and learned new things with ease. She took up riding at age four, and rode nearly every day until she was eighteen. Since her parents were able to afford nice, expensive mounts, she went to Pony Finals multiple times, and even competed at Junior Equitation Finals when she was seventeen. However, while her parents always wanted her to win, Holland just loved to ride for the sake of riding.
When Holland was fifteen, she joined a Christian group at school, at the pressing of some of her friends. What she thought would be a simple youth group (she had never believed in God but was willing to give it a shot) was actually a really intense, cultish program that preached hellfire for eternity. This came at a terrible time, as she was also struggling with her sexuality. And there's nothing like organized religion to make you hate who you are.
Already struggling with self-hatred and guilt for liking girls, she confided in a friend that she was gay, and it spread throughout the school. In a Martha's Vineyard prep school, this was not good news. She was bullied constantly, verbally abused in school, and physically abused after 3:30. However, she couldn't tell her parents, because that would include telling them she was gay.
So, the day before her senior year, Holland rode her horse, kissed him goodbye, then downed an entire bottle of Hyrdocodone. Her parents found her before she died, called 911, and she had her stomach pumped and was put in the hospital for weeks. Most of that was recovering from the physical trauma...but she also had a three week stint in the psych ward.
Not knowing what to do, her parents sent her to Brookhaven Ranch. The only thing they really knew about their daughter was that she loved horses, so if anything could heal her, they could. Besides, why fix the problem themselves when they could just write a check and have someone else do it for them?
